Below are some of the specific programs, projects, and technical assistance in chronological order that have been either proposed, implemented, planned, or are now in progress throughout the Coal Regions of Northeastern PA. EPCAMR has played an important role in actively participating in these projects over the last few years through the support of Conservation Districts, Watershed Organizations, Regional Non-Profits, Industry, Local, State, and Federal partners.
The EPCAMR has completed several construction projects since it’s inception in 1997. One of the most successful programs was the Regional Watershed Support Initiative (RWSI). From 1997 – 2002 EPCAMR was able to complete 75 projects with $200,000 in grant funds from PA Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Mining and Reclamation with $2 Million generated in matching funds. Some of these construction projects include:
Provided funding for Diversion Well Construction on Dyer Run - Tributary to the West Branch Schuylkill River Watershed
Provided funding for Diversion Well Construction on Stony Creek - Tributary to the Rausch Creek Watershed
Provided a portion of the funding for the Minersville Wetlands Construction on the West Branch of the Schuylkill River
Provided funding for Diversion Well on Silver Brook Creek - Tributary to the Little Schuylkill River
Provided a portion of the funding for the Lausanne Tunnel AMD Remediation Project on Nesquehoning Creek - Tributary to the Lehigh River Watershed
Provided funds to plant "The Swamp" AMD Treatment site on the Mahanoy Creek
Provided funding for construction of an Open Limestone Channel at two locations in the Tioga River Watershed
Other projects include:
EPCAMR Staff managed an ESRI National Livable Communities and Environmental Protection Grants which was worth $6,800 in GIS Software in 1998.
Coordination of the Oneida #1 Mine Tunnel Oxic Limestone Drain Treatment System at Eagle Rock Resorts, Hazleton, a $305,000 project completed in 2001.
Completed the Bowman’s Creek Coldwater Heritage Partnership Watershed Assessment in 2002.
Served on the Non-Point Source Liaison Committee for the PA Department of Environmental Protection from 2002 to the present.
Aided the SRBC in the Upper Tioga River Watershed Assessment Team in 2002.
Aided in the completion of the Wiconisco Creek Rivers Conservation Plan in cooperation with Dauphin County Conservation District in 2004. This lead to construction of a treatment system on the Bear Creek Tributary which began in the Summer of 2005. EPCAMR was able to secure about $70,000 in funding through the Office of Surface Mining for this $300,000 project.
Completed the Catawissa Creek Watershed Restoration Assessment Strategy with the PA DEP BWM-Section 319 PG in 2003.
Completed the Audenried & Green Mountain Tunnel Wetlands Delineation and Identification in 2004 as a part of the Audenried Tunnel AMD Treatment Project which began in the Summer of 2005.
Secured $150,000 through the Office of Surface Mining for the Audenried Tunnel AMD Passive Treatment System. A total estimated cost to build the system is over $1.9 Million and will be the largest treatment system in the PA Anthracite Region, treating a flow of 8,500 gallons per minute of acidic aluminum laden AMD.
Secured $5,500 from the Degenstein Foundation for the design of a treatment system at the Lewis Mine Site in the Loyalsock Watershed.
