PTS - AMD Passive Treatment Systems

Here is just a hand full of photos that we have collected over the years, but we plan to populate this site with several more to make a sort of a virtual tour of Treatment Systems in the Anthracite Region.

Phase 1 Aerobic Wetlands, Nanticoke Creek Watershed

Above is a panoramic shot of the Earth Conservancy Phase 1 Aerobic Wetland Passive Treatment System near Nanticoke, PA in the Nanticoke Creek Watershed.

Oneida 1 Oxic Limestone Drain, Catawissa Creek Watershed

Above is a shot of the Anoxic Limestone Drain Passive Treatment System that treats the Oneida #1 Discharge in the Catawissa Creek Watershed, Schyulkill COunty, PA. The shot to the left was taken at the bottom of the settling pond looking up toward the source of discharge in the top left hand corner of the picture. The acidic almuinum laden water filters through 8,000 tons of limestone that lies underneath the large field in the center of the picture. The treated water is then conveyed via limestone rock channels into the settling pond where the aluminum is collected giving it a greyish/white appearance. The clean water is then distilled off the top and added back into the Sugarloaf Creek. The shot above to the right is a photo durring construction of the system showing the limestone beds that were constructed to convey the water.

Lusanne Tunnel Aerobic Wetlands, Lehigh River Watershed

In the shot to the left, Tom Kerr, Wildlands Conservancy President and Chris Kocher, Wildlands Conservancy Chief Program Officer / Director of Rivers Program and head of the Lausanne Tunnel project, ceremoniously 'open the valves' to allow the mine waters into the treatment ponds. The shot to the right shows one of the wetland ponds. See the GreenTreks Network Watershed Tv Special on the Lusanne Tunnel.

EPCAMR also helps to update the Statewide AMD Treatment System Database through the Office Of Surface mining and the DEP Non-Point Liaison Workgroup. We attempt to keep track of and add new treatment systems to the database so that they may be considered for current and future Operation and Maintenance Funding (If your treatment system is not in the database, please let us know).
